Meeting Information -Monthly Meeting

Attendees: 8 Members, 2 Guests

Board Members Present: Jan Prytz, President; Jessica Rittgarn, Vice President of Meetings; Madelynn MacRunnel, Treasurer; Taylor Darby, Secretary; Susan Long, Vice President of Charity Projects; Angelica Jones, Vice President of Social Media
Board Member Absent: None


Meeting Discussion


  1. Jan Prytz, the President, informed the group of the following:
    1. Dues for 2019 are due at the January meeting and they will be increased to:
      1. $40 for an annual membership
      2. $25 for late memberships (registered after June)
    2. Please nominate board members for next year if you’d like
      1. We will present the nominees to the guild at the November meeting and vote at the December meeting
    3. The last day to turn in the charity quilt to Susan in at the November meeting.
    4. Next board meeting is on November 8th at 8-bit Brewery, and the next guild meeting is November 15th.
  2. Treasurer’s Report: The account balance as of as of October 11th, 2018 was $1051.10.
  3. Jessica Rittgarn, the Vice President of Meetings, informed the group of the following:
    1. Our charity quilt sew-in will be November 4th, 2018
  4. Raffle Ticket WINNERS:
    1. Nancy: The Men Behind the Quilts calendar
    2. Linda: Fat Quarter Fabric Bundle
    3. Susan: Primitive Gatherings gift card

  1. Jan – showed us her jellyroll race quilt finished.  It looks like an abstract landscape painting. Jan will be donating it to our guild.

  2. Nancy and Jan – did a two-color quilt challenge together.  Jan pieced and Nancy quilted. This quilt will be entered into the MQG 2019 two-color quilt challenge.
  3. Nancy – showed us her butterfly block of the month.
  4. Madelynn – showed us her butterfly block of the month for September and the charity quilt she finished and donated this month
  5. Debbie – showed us a quilt she made from a quilt kit she found at Needle and a Fabric Stash.  The pattern called for curved piecing and paper piecing, but she found a way to avoid paper piecing using applique instead.
  6. Linda – showed us a quilt she made using salvaged strips from her friend in Oregon.  She was able to make a VERY large king-sized, Christmas-colored, log cabin quilt.


Presentations


  1. BOM is the August block of the month from Boulder Modern Quilt Guild:  See the TVMQG Blog for the pattern.  
    1. ACTION ITEM: All members are requested to bring in the BOM for next month’s meeting.
    2. REMINDER: instructions are up on the blog.
  2. Linda gave a presentation on two-fabric applique
    1. Originated in Hawaii by Nancy Lee Chong, and evolved into a larger international company called Pacific Rim Quilt Company (www.prqc.com)
    2. Linda advises to:
      1. choose colors of fabric with a nice contrast.
      2. choose a marking tool in a color that shows up well.
      3. recently bought a Caterpillar Glow flat lightbox to make tracing the pattern easier.
      4. Linda likes using “straw” needle to applique.
      5. Linda uses a toothpick to turn tight corners.
      6. Use fray check if needed.
    3. Steps:
      1. Layout fabric onto the pattern and pin.
      2. Set up your lightbox configuration and lay fabric/pattern on lightbox workspace.
      3. Draw pattern lines onto fabric moving the fabric over the light source as needed.
        • Make sure to transfer any markings on the pattern that indicate instructions.
        • Mark which sections will end up being cut out and thrown away.
      4. Remove fabric from pattern and place marked fabric onto background fabric and baste generously throughout the piece.

Meeting Discussion

  1. Jan Prytz, the President, informed the group of the following:
    1. October we will submit 2019 board nominations, and in November we will vote for 2019 board members.
    2. Charity quilts need to be bound and turned in at our September meeting.
    3. Next month’s meeting we will have a yard sale amongst ourselves.  Bring anything you would like to donate.
    4. We are not having a board meeting until October 4th.
    5. Our charm pack challenge quilts are due next month.
    6. There are two charity quilts that still need to be pieced.
  1. Treasurer’s Report: The account balance as of as of August 16th, 2018 was $871.10.
 .                     Cash was withdrawn for our July meeting was kept separate from the account and brought to the meeting to pay any members who finished quilting a charity quilt. The $20 each was meant to pay for the batting.
  1. Jessica Rittgarn, the Vice President of Meetings, informed the group of the following:
 .                    She will be sending out an email with information regarding our sit-n-sew to get our QuiltCon Challenge quilt started.
                                                                           i.                  The plan is to meet this Sunday, August 19th, 2018. At about 10:00am.

1.   Patty – Shared a quilt she made using a Jen Kingwell pattern and all Primitive Gatherings fabrics.

2.           Colleen – Made a mini-pieced block for her San Diego Quilt Guild.  She made a mini “bear cub” quilt.

3.                  Jessica – Shared her finished jelly roll quilt top from our jelly roll race last meeting.  She also showed us a finished t-shirt quilt top she made for her neighbor.

4.                  Rosanne – Shared her finished jelly roll quilt top from our jelly roll race last meeting.

5.                  Jane – Shared a book she found called Trade Quilts by David Butler. The book is filled with more masculine looking quilts.  She shared a flannel quilt top she made for her nephew using a pattern from the book.

6.                  Jeanie – Shared a king-sized quilt top she made called Moonlight Senada.

7.                  Madelynn – Shared the finished jelly roll quilt top from our jelly roll race last meeting.

8.                  Linda – Shared the finished queen-sized quilt she shared last month when it was only a quilt top.

9.                  Maritza – Shared a quilt she made using a new technique she learned called “one-block-wonder”.

10.             Susan – Shared her first hand-embroidered piece.  She made a flowery throw pillow.

  1. Colleen gave a Color Theory Presentation
 .                    Primary, secondary, and tertiary colors
a.                 Hues vs shades, tints, and tones.
b.                 Values: adding white, black, or (in the case of watercolors) water to only one hue to get a wide range of colors.
c.                 We played with color chips in a Color Theory activity.
d.                 We played with fabric while we learned about values versus colors.
i.                        Use a cell phone to take a black and white photo of your fabric choices in order to make better fabric choices in regards to value.
e.                 Using the “rule of parts” you can manipulate focal points in your quilt design.

Meeting Discussion

  1. Jan Prytz, the President, informed the group of the following:
a.                 Jessica Rittgarn is in charge of the QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge. Look out for details from her regarding sew-in plans.
b.                 Everyone’s quilted charity quilts need to be turned in next month.
c.                 We will keep the same block of the month from June/July meeting to be turned in at the August meeting as well.
  1. Treasurer’s Report: The account balance as of as of July 18th, 2018 was $846.  Cash was withdrawn and brought to the meeting to pay any members who finished quilting a charity quilt. The $20 each was meant to pay for the batting.

1.   Jan Prytz – Showed us a pillow from Norway that incorporated folds into the piecing of the pillow top; she also showed us two quilts she made alongside our guild charity quilts using the same blocks and pattern.
2.   Colleen – finished a quilt she started back in the days of Flickr, before Instagram. She is thinking about donating it to Quilts of Valor; Finished a clamshell quilt she started at a Latifa Saafir workshop in Santa Cruz.  The clamshells were cut out using Latifa’s technique in times before Accuquilt.
3.   Susan – made a Patchwork Forest quilt by Amy Smart and a “making faces” mini quilt using instructions found in Melissa Averino’s book Making Faces in Fabric.
4.   Jessica – made a quilt from the charm pack she won at one of our meetings.
5.   Maritza – made a purple, orange, and black octagon quilt using Accuquilt; she made a pet portrait mini quilt of her dog using a class she found online; she made a little purse using the paper piecing technique and her “add-a-quarter” ruler; she also made a stuffed giraffe mat for her baby grand-daughter to play on.
6.   Linda – quilted a Hoffman digital Dream Big panel and loved it so much she bought 7!
7.   Nancy – quilted a quilt top pieced by her sister; she told us about a UV light she uses when quilting white fabric using white thread.  It makes the thread glow so you can see what you’re doing better.
8.   Jan Gates – quilted an orange and teal quilt she calls Sherbet Daisies; she also made two Halloween pumpkin panels
